Book Title: The 12 Week Year

Author: Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington

Before Reading the Book:

I used to be someone who planned a lot… and executed very little.

Every year in January, I’d make a big list of goals. Things like: “Make six figures this year,” “Start a YouTube channel,” “Lose 10 kg,” “Wake up at 5 AM every day.” You know, the usual New Year hype. But by February, life would hit, distractions would sneak in, and my goals would quietly fade into the background.

It wasn’t that I was lazy. I worked late nights, juggled clients, and always had some side project on the go. But I was constantly overwhelmed, spread thin, and—honestly—exhausted from never feeling like I was making real progress.

There were moments when I thought, “Maybe I’m just not cut out for big success.” That thought hurt the most.

Discovering the Book That Changed Everything:

One night, I was scrolling on X (formerly Twitter) and came across a post from a productivity coach I follow. He wrote:
“Stop thinking in years. Start thinking in 12 weeks. The book that made me $100k last quarter: ‘The 12 Week Year.’”

I was intrigued. I’d never heard of that book before. The idea of treating 12 weeks like a full year felt weird—but kind of brilliant. I checked the reviews, read a few highlights, and decided to give it a shot. I ordered the Kindle version that same night.

After the Book:

From the first few chapters, I knew this wasn’t another fluffy motivational book. The authors weren’t just throwing around big ideas—they gave a full system. A real, actionable structure.

The biggest realization? Annual planning is broken. When we set goals for 12 months, we think we have “plenty of time,” so we procrastinate. But if we only have 12 weeks, there’s no room for delay. Every week counts. Every day matters.

The book walked me through how to set specific goals for a 12-week period, how to break them down into weekly plans, and how to measure execution with brutal honesty. But here’s the key: it wasn’t about doing more—it was about doing what actually mattered.

It flipped my mindset. I started asking: What are the critical few actions that will truly move the needle? Not the easy tasks. Not the busywork. The real work.

The Transformation:

I started my first 12-week year the week after finishing the book.

I set three goals:

  1. Sign 5 new high-ticket clients for my freelance marketing services
  2. Create and publish a free lead magnet to build my email list
  3. Work out 3x per week to rebuild my health

For 12 weeks, I tracked my progress every week. I created a scoreboard, rated my weekly execution, and held myself accountable like never before.

Here’s what happened:

But the biggest win wasn’t the numbers—it was my focus. I finally felt in control of my time and energy. No more wandering through the day wondering what to do. No more endless to-do lists. Just clarity and execution.

This system turned me from a dreamer into a finisher.

My Favorite Line & How It Helps Me Every Day:

“Execution is the single greatest market differentiator.”

That line hit me like a brick. It reminded me that success isn’t about how smart I am or how many ideas I have—it’s about what I do consistently.

Now, every time I feel the urge to plan too much or dream too big without action, I go back to this line. It grounds me. It reminds me that doing the work is what separates the winners from the wishers.

To Anyone Considering This Book:

If you’ve ever felt stuck in the cycle of setting goals and not following through, this book is for you. If you’re tired of seeing December arrive and wondering where the year went—read this book.

The 12 Week Year doesn’t promise a magic fix. But it does give you a clear, no-excuses roadmap to real results. Whether you’re a business owner, a student, or just someone trying to get your life together—it works.

But here’s the catch: You have to commit. Read the book, apply the system, track your execution. Don’t just consume it—live it. One 12-week period can change your life.

For me, it did.

And now? I don’t set yearly goals anymore. I live in 12-week years. And I’ve never been more focused, productive, or confident in what I can achieve.
