I’m going to update you on what’s been happening chez moi since I last posted, and what I see happening on here in the coming year.
So when did I last post? August? Ah, September. About Narcolepsy. Since then, I’ve run a 10 mile race, a 10K race, been to New York, graduated, and spent money on furniture. The last is the most exciting. I’m not even half joking. I didn’t realise owning a house would make me so pushily proud of objects. Not even nice objects; if you’ve been round my gaff, chances are I’ve made you admire my boiler. Nearly £3,000 that cost me (us), of course I’ll make you say it’s bloody brilliant. Anyway, I digress.
I finished my Master’s in September, all handed in on the 20th. After that, I had few words left. I managed to stammer out a post about the ol’ narcolepsy, but I was drained. My diary from September to January has huge gaping holes in it. Even when I was in the Slough of Despond*, I simply couldn’t find the words or the will to put pen to paper and work it out in my journal.
But I used that time to think about what I wanted to do with my words, when they returned. I thought about how much I liked writing on this blog. I thought about whether it mattered to me if anyone read it. I thought about what I should write about. I thought about what I wanted to write about. And then I came out of the other side with a few ideas and the stirrings of a desire to write. What matters to me are books, running and my garden**, so I’m going to write about books, running and my garden.
I read a lot of books. I listen to a lot of audiobooks. I thought I’d review them, and share my thoughts with the world. Please be nice: I’ve never reviewed books before, and I’m finding my feet. The first review will go live tomorrow at 6pm and it’s of Golden Hill by Francis Spufford.
I’m all paid and signed up to do the Leeds Half Marathon in May. It’s not far from my home, and I fancied doing a run with hills. Well, I fancy doing a run with hills while it’s still 3 and a half months away. The aim is to write a weekly summary on my week’s running. Maybe I’ll even share my (totally amateur) training plan.
I had no life last summer, my Master’s dissertation consuming my every waking moment as it did. This year, we are going to Do the Garden. Oh yes, we are going to sculpt, hone and refine our land until it is a veritable paradise in a York cul-de-sac. Again, the aim is to write a weekly summary.
I do realise these are a lot of plans, but I’ll try to stick to it. I’m nothing if not determined.
How are you doing otherwise?
Yeah, mixed. Well, right now, I’m sleepy after a bath and a bit grumpy because Andy has eaten the Mini Eggs that were for sharing.
I’ve been having some trouble with my sleep breaks too, and I find that I feel really quite rubbish- I am Queen of the Understatement- if I skip more than 2. I’m still finding my feet. I’ve also come across people who don’t take me seriously, with regards to the big N, which I wasn’t expecting. Maybe that’s a bit naive of me, but I thought people would understand. I’ll get there.
There have been good things, though. I graduated! We went to New York! That last one was just super. We did everything and it was lovely and warm.
There are some exciting things happening this year, too. We’re going to Iceland, there’ll be more running, and I’d quite like to go to India.
